while others weren’t.<br />

The conservative<br />

members wanted to<br />

keep things the way<br />

they were in the past. I<br />

and others knew this<br />

was impossible and<br />

undesirable. Growth<br />

requires change.<br />

Un<strong>for</strong>tunately,<br />

the previous pastor, Leon Wilhite, retired but continued<br />

attending as a church member. He said he<br />

wouldn’t interfere in my ministry, but his presence<br />

was a reminder of “the good old days.” Leon was an<br />

elderly, easy going, non-controversial, midwestern<br />

pastor of the old school--quite my opposite. His wife<br />

was much less easy going, critical, and ready to speak<br />

her mind, especially among the women’s group.<br />

Divisions between old and new, young and old<br />

were highlighted at a church council meeting in January<br />

1992 when the newly elected officers began their<br />

terms. Julie Kettler, a young mother and homemaker,<br />

was elected Financial Secretary and there<strong>for</strong>e based<br />

on the bylaws, expected to serve on the Finance<br />

Committee. However, the committee chair, George<br />

Gramer opposed this. He wanted to keep the previous<br />

Financial Secretary on the committee. Someone ar-<br />
