When we arrived in Clinton, church members helped
us unload the van and move into the parsonage. A
couple of months after I began my pastorate, I was
formally installed as pastor and teacher of Community
Congregational United Church of Christ, Clinton,
Iowa. I made the transition from being a brahmin and
sannyasi in India to being a Christian pastor in the
Midwest. This gives me a unique dual religious and
cultural spiritual perspective.
I bought a used Stratocaster and amp, then replaced
my Casio keyboard with a Roland synthesizer.
Geraldine bought a drum kit, and the parsonage
rocked.
The church joined the Town and Country Alliance
for Ministry, a church-based community organizing
group associated with the Gamaliel Foundation in
Chicago. One church member and I attended a weeklong
organizing training. In this way, I worked for
positive social change.
