Douglas Fir <strong>for</strong>est and clear the irrigation ditch from<br />

where it met Little Butte Creek, through the pasture,<br />

to the pond and another ditch where we installed a<br />

good sized hydroelectric generator. The power company<br />

ran a line to it and bought electricity from us..<br />

It was great going into the <strong>for</strong>est every day,<br />

wading in the stream moving logs and boulders--<br />

what beautiful work. When the pasture was irrigated,<br />

geldings stayed in it. We had chickens <strong>for</strong> eggs and<br />

goats to eat the blackberry bushes.<br />

A logging company did a seedling cut and<br />

harvested trees from the ranch. We used a railroad<br />

flatcar to make a bridge across the creek so they could<br />

harvest the other side. I used an Alaskan mill to cut<br />

huge slabs of board from a tree to make planks <strong>for</strong> the<br />

bridge.<br />

One night, my family and I returned from<br />

Med<strong>for</strong>d. I went out on the second floor balcony to<br />

smoke. I could see a fire across the creek where a<br />

loader and other equipment was located. I grabbed a<br />

shovel and drove there. The fire was too big to put out<br />

with a shovel. I called the Forest Service to send a<br />

truck and crew to put it out.<br />

I cleaned up after the loggers finished. It was<br />

hard work piling slash in the hot sun <strong>for</strong> burning<br />

while RVs headed down the road to fish and camp.<br />

The loggers left many primo down trees, and the<br />

owners wanted hardwood trees like oak and mountain<br />

laurel removed so the fir would grow better.<br />

I made a deal with the owners to work <strong>for</strong><br />

them half time <strong>for</strong> half pay. The other half time, I ran a<br />
