He laid there silently fuming, and I returned to<br />

When I came out a short while later, he was<br />

waiting there with a bucket of water, which he threw<br />

on me. Yadav-acharya, a black devotee from Detroit,<br />

saw this and laughed. However, when the priest<br />

raised the metal bucket to hit me with it, he didn’t<br />

think it was funny and ran to my assistance.<br />

I avoided the blow. We fought with the priest,<br />

who was no match <strong>for</strong> the two of us, and yet, he kept<br />

fighting. Yadav-acharya, a good street fighter, pulverized<br />

the priest’s face and gouged his eye. Finally, the<br />

priest gave up and ran off.<br />

In India, to beat someone with bare hands was<br />

not a crime. The priest went to the nearby police outpost<br />

at the edge of town and told them we used a<br />

knife on him. His face was such a mess they believed<br />

him. They came and arrested us. I accused the priest<br />

of attacking me. The three of us were marched<br />

through town and taken to jail. After a while, we all<br />

dropped charges and were released.<br />

When Swamiji heard about this, he was furious.<br />

He ordered me to apologize to the priest and beg<br />

his <strong>for</strong>giveness. I did, but I didn't like it at all. Swamiji<br />
