shared meals with them. It was wonderful to see the<br />

Northern Lights on a clear starlit night.<br />

We made our way westward. I was disturbed<br />

to learn of the new book distribution techniques people<br />

like Tripurari and Rameswar introduced to<br />

ISKCON. Men with shaved heads wore wigs and<br />

regular street clothes to avoid being identified as Hare<br />

Krishna devotees because people avoided them. They<br />

often distributed things like incense and flowers at<br />

events to get donations without people knowing who<br />

they gave to. They learned change-up, con, and hustle<br />

techniques.<br />

We were well received in Regina, Saskatchewan.<br />

Some interested people from there went with us<br />

to Saskatoon and then to the Calgary Stampede, a big<br />

rodeo. The bus was parked in an open area near the<br />

Stampede grounds. We distributed food, chanted, and<br />

However, I was unhappy with the way things<br />

were going. From what I heard about life in the Toronto<br />

temple, I couldn’t in good conscience advise<br />

new people to go to the temple to be used, abused,<br />

chewed up, and spit out. Institutional concerns and<br />

fundraising took precedence over people.<br />

I returned to Regina, rented a house and<br />

started a preaching center. It was good <strong>for</strong> a while<br />

preaching to the new devotees, some of whom had a<br />
