We spread out some books and notes on the<br />

trunk of a car and had a last minute cram session.<br />

Good thing I like to be early. I took the final and<br />

passed.<br />

In the spring of 1990, I became bored with<br />

school, constant assignments, and pleasing professors.<br />

Internship was a welcome relief. I did part of it at the<br />

University of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia campus ministry with Bill Ing<br />

as my supervisor. We engaged in peace and justice<br />

work together. I also started a group called Agnostics<br />

<strong>An</strong>onymous to encourage thinking people to question<br />

their beliefs. I taught that it isn’t necessary to believe<br />

in the virgin birth, physical resurrection, miracles,<br />

etc., to be a Christian. Doing ministry on a large, progressive<br />

campus with little support was challenging.<br />

I also interned at Calvary Presbyterian Church.<br />

Pastor Larry Petersen was my supervisor. We shared<br />

leadership of worship, funerals, preaching, teaching,<br />

etc. He showed me how things are done in the church.<br />

The congregation welcomed me. A Sri Lankan congregation<br />

shared the building. Of course, being an intern<br />

didn’t prepare me <strong>for</strong> parish ministry. The pastor<br />

always gets the heat from the congregation, not the<br />

intern. After I graduated, Larry left ministry and became<br />

a printing sales representative.<br />

In the fall, I took a class called Jesus the Jew. It<br />

was taught by Christian and Jewish professors and<br />

attended by students of both faiths. It was an in<strong>for</strong>mative<br />

historical look at who Jesus really was—a Jew<br />
