lived in the Lower East Side.<br />

He turned me on to a sugar cube of LSD. I<br />

went home and tripped at night. I saw the interconnectedness<br />

of all things. I also saw how crazy New<br />

York was. I looked out the window at the city and realized<br />

New York wasn’t a good place <strong>for</strong> me to live. I<br />

decided not to spend another winter there.<br />

On the Road<br />

A cold, drizzly day in October 1965, I stood at the entrance<br />

to the Jersey Turnpike hitchhiking to Mexico<br />

City with a duffle bag and guitar. I hit the road in<br />

search of enlightenment, adventure, and romance.<br />

Kerouac, the existentialists, LSD, pot, and the Village<br />

scene fueled my spiritual quest.<br />

A series of rides took me to Kansas City. Wandering<br />

around stockyards at night between Kansas<br />

City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, after three<br />

days on the road dealing with rednecks, gays, cops<br />

and sundry others, I decided to go Greyhound.<br />

On the bus to Laredo, I met Paul, a young Missourian<br />

on his way to San Miguel de Allende, an artist<br />

colony in the mountains north of Mexico City. While<br />

drinking tequila and eating in Laredo, Paul persuaded<br />

me to go with him.<br />

We took crowded, hot, bumpy busses to Guadalajara,<br />

and from there, a train crowded with chick-<br />
