building. Bath water was heated in pots and poured<br />

into a galvanized tub.<br />

From Berlin, I went to Paris. The devotees’<br />

small apartment served as residence and temple.<br />

They rented a room in a nearby hotel <strong>for</strong> me. They<br />

frequently chanted, danced, and collected donations<br />

in the streets. They looked like a band of rabble as<br />

they emerged from the subway and danced down the<br />

street chanting Hare Krishna while keeping an eye<br />

out <strong>for</strong> gendarmes who drove by in buses.<br />

I lectured at the American Center,<br />

American High School, International<br />

University, and Theosophical<br />

Society. At the Theosophical Society,<br />

after my lecture, which was<br />

translated into French, an old<br />

Frenchman stood up during the<br />

question and answer period and<br />

asked, "What is the difference between<br />

Madvacharya and Shankaracharya's interpretation<br />

of Vedanta?"<br />

I was glad to have such an intelligent question<br />

asked of me, and I explained the difference between<br />

their respective personal and impersonal views of<br />

God. <strong>An</strong>other older man stood up and said, "I accept<br />

everything you say. How can I follow you?" I was<br />

moved by the man's enthusiasm and told him, "Come<br />

to the temple, chant Hare Krishna, and study Bhagavad<br />

Gita." He did.<br />
