Geraldine’s parents, Joe and Inez, lived in Fremont<br />

and her sister Linda lived in San Francisco. I got<br />

to know them on our trips to the Bay Area. We sometimes<br />

stayed with her parents. Inez asked, “How<br />

come you’re going to seminary and yet you’re living<br />

together?”<br />

Geraldine said, “Oh Ma, it’s not that kind of<br />

church.”<br />

Joe was friendly, and since I didn’t get along<br />

with my father, I was happy to be well received by<br />

both Joe and Inez.<br />

Geraldine wasn’t sure if she wanted to get<br />

married. We discussed it and called John Irvine to see<br />

just what he meant by, “I think it might be a good<br />

idea.” It was his way<br />

of saying, “Yes.” She<br />

accepted my proposal.<br />

We set the date<br />

<strong>for</strong> May 2, 1988,<br />

shortly be<strong>for</strong>e we<br />

moved to Berkeley.<br />

It was a church<br />

wedding conducted<br />

by Caren Caldwell<br />

that included readings<br />

from Gita<br />

Govinda, hymns, and<br />

communion, which<br />

we helped serve. Her<br />
