Chapter 7<br />

UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST<br />

Asha and I went to Sufi meetings at a practitioner’s<br />

home <strong>for</strong> spiritual nourishment. However, they provided<br />

nothing <strong>for</strong> the kids. We decided to look <strong>for</strong> a<br />

church. Asha was raised Catholic, but that was too<br />

dogmatic and hierarchical <strong>for</strong> me. I looked on the<br />

newspaper church page. It said the Ashland Congregational<br />

United Church of Christ (UCC) was holding<br />

a special worship led by the women. It was close to<br />

home. We decided to check it out.<br />

Worship included a reading from Khalil Gibran’s<br />

The Prophet, liturgical dance, and a slide show<br />

with narration describing God’s presence in nature.<br />

The congregation included adults with mental handicaps<br />

from a group home. When one of them acted up,<br />

the pastor, who sat in the back, went and sat with her.<br />

It was cool. I thought, “I can handle this.”<br />

A couple of days later, I met with Pastor Norm<br />

Broadbent in his study. I told him my background and<br />

said I wanted to work with him.<br />

He said, “How would you like to teach an<br />

adult class after church about eastern religion and<br />

Christianity?”<br />

I said, “Fine.”<br />

Asha and I attended church regularly. Children<br />

attended the first part of worship then left after the<br />
