Manual 4:HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT FACT SHEETSILO Recommendation No. 192 on <strong>Safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Health</strong> in Agriculture: Paragraph 8Measures for h<strong>and</strong>ling biological agents <strong>and</strong> for h<strong>and</strong>ling animals shouldcomprise: risk assessment measures to eliminate, prevent or reduce biologicalrisks; control <strong>and</strong> testing of animals, in accordance with veterinary st<strong>and</strong>ards<strong>and</strong> national law <strong>and</strong> practice, for diseases transmissible to humans; protective measures for the h<strong>and</strong>ling of animals <strong>and</strong>, whereappropriate, provision of protective equipment <strong>and</strong> clothing;protective measures for the h<strong>and</strong>ling of biological agents <strong>and</strong>, ifnecessary, provision of appropriate protective equipment <strong>and</strong> clothing;immunisation of workers h<strong>and</strong>ling animals, as appropriate;provision of disinfectants <strong>and</strong> washing facilities, <strong>and</strong> the maintenance<strong>and</strong> cleaning of personal protective equipment <strong>and</strong> clothing;provision of first aid, antidotes or other emergency procedures in case ofcontact with poisonous animals, insects or plants;safety measures for the h<strong>and</strong>ling, collection, storage <strong>and</strong> disposal ofmanure <strong>and</strong> waste;safety measures for the h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong> disposal of carcasses of infectedanimals, including the cleaning <strong>and</strong> disinfection of contaminatedpremises; <strong>and</strong>safety information including warning signs <strong>and</strong> training for thoseworkers h<strong>and</strong>ling animals. Encourage your union todevelop agreements on biological hazards, using as a basis Article 14 ofthe ILO Convention No. 184 on <strong>Safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Health</strong> in Agriculture.Recommendations Worker HS&E representatives will need to ensure that they are effectivelyon prevention consulted about risk assessments. You want to be sure that thorough riskassessments are carried out, procedures developed, <strong>and</strong> exposure tobiological agents prevented or controlled.
