Manual 5:PESTICIDES AND HEALTH,SAFETY & THE ENVIRONMENTdinoseb, fluoroacetamide, HCH, heptachlor, hexachlorobenzene, lindane,mercury compounds, <strong>and</strong> pentachlorophenol, plus certain formulations ofmethamidophos, methyl-parathion, monocrotophos, parathion, <strong>and</strong>phosphamidon. Since September 1998 six additional pesticides(binapacryl, toxaphene, ethylene oxide, ethylene dichloride,monocrotophos <strong>and</strong> DNOC) <strong>and</strong> one additional severely hazardouspesticide formulation (dustable powder formulations containing acombination of benomyl, at or above 7 per cent; carbofuran, at or above 10per cent; <strong>and</strong> thiram, at or above 15 per cent have been added to theinterim PIC procedure.NoteBanned pesticide means a pesticide for which all uses have beenprohibited by final regulatory action, in order to protect humanhealth or the environment. It includes a pesticide that has beenrefused approval for first-time use or has been withdrawn byindustry either from the domestic market or for further considerationin the domestic approval process <strong>and</strong> where there is clear evidencethat such action has been taken in order to protect human health orthe environment. (FAO <strong>International</strong> Code of Conduct on theDistribution <strong>and</strong> Use of Pesticides, Revised Version 2003)UNEP Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants 2000The legally-binding Stockholm Convention on Persistent OrganicPollutants (POPs) introduces bans, phase outs, clean production, or otheractions to eliminate POPs. Nine pesticides are currently included in theConvention: aldrin, dieldrin, DDT, endrin, chlordane, hexachlorobenzene,mirex, toxaphene, <strong>and</strong> heptachlor.UN World <strong>Health</strong> Organisation (WHO)The <strong>International</strong> Programme on Chemical <strong>Safety</strong> (IPCS) is a jointprogramme of three UN organisations – ILO, UNEP <strong>and</strong> WHO each dealingwith different aspects of chemical safety.
