Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all programcoursework except either INFA 610 or ACCT 665. A capstonestudy <strong>of</strong> accounting and information systems that integratessubject matter from previous study. Advanced principles, techniques,and theories are applied through the analysis and presentation<strong>of</strong> case studies by student teams. Assignments includea research paper that comprehensively assesses an importantcurrent issue or emerging trend in the fields <strong>of</strong> accounting andinformation systems.MSFS (Financial Management and InformationSystems)MSFS 670 Financial Management and InformationSystems Capstone (3)Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> all program coursework excepteither FIN 645 or INFA 610. A synthesis <strong>of</strong> material fromall previous study in financial management and informationsystems that reflects the importance <strong>of</strong> information systems inmodern organizations and the role <strong>of</strong> the CFO/CIO in managingthis resource to maximize value. Simulations provide theopportunity to apply theory to practice. Topics include theacquisition, installation, and management <strong>of</strong> information systems.Important current issues and emerging trends in the fields<strong>of</strong> financial management and information systems are emphasizedthrough special readings, briefing papers, and discussion.NPMN (Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Management)NPMN 600 Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it and Association Organizations andIssues (3)(Formerly ADMN 656.) Presentation <strong>of</strong> a framework outliningthe roles and functions <strong>of</strong> the principal types <strong>of</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations.Characteristics that distinguish nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizationsfrom their counterparts in the private and public sectorsare introduced. The challenges, opportunities, and commonissues facing managers <strong>of</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations are explored.These issues include administrative cost control, preserving theorganization’s legal status and revenue base, staffing and organizingin response to client needs, and ethical considerations.Specific laws, regulations, policies, and court rulings that affectthe nonpr<strong>of</strong>it sector are examined.NPMN 610 Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it and Association Law andGovernance (3)(Formerly ADMN 657.) A study <strong>of</strong> current ideas and approachesrelated to nonpr<strong>of</strong>it law, governance, and mission. Discussioncovers distinctions between nonpr<strong>of</strong>it, educational, charitable,social action, membership, cultural, scientific, environmental,and trade associations as they relate to incorporation, legal standing,tax-exempt status, and governance. Topics include nonpr<strong>of</strong>itgovernance and trustee issues, as well as lobbying and advocacy,nonpr<strong>of</strong>it liability, personnel, and unrelated business income tax.Special attention is paid to the relationship <strong>of</strong> governance andethics in nonpr<strong>of</strong>it management.NPMN 620 Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it and Association FinancialManagement (3)(Formerly ADMN 654.) A detailed study <strong>of</strong> theories and practices<strong>of</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it financial management and decision making,including budgeting, reporting requirements, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it accounting,and financial standards. Focus is on the role <strong>of</strong> financialmanagement in maintaining the fiscal health and legal status<strong>of</strong> the nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organization. Topics include budgeting, fundaccounting, cash flow analysis, expenditure control, long-rangefinancial planning, audits, and grant and contract management.Discussion also covers compliance with nonpr<strong>of</strong>it accountingand financial management principles in reference to maintainingpublic access and ethical standards.NPMN 640 Marketing, Development, and Public Relations inNonpr<strong>of</strong>it Organizations and Associations (3)(Formerly ADMN 658.) A study <strong>of</strong> the principles and practicesrequired to develop and promote the products, services,positions, and image <strong>of</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations. Focus is onfundraising and membership recruitment issues. Topics includethe design <strong>of</strong> a marketing strategy and marketing mix, pricingissues, alternative revenue-generating mechanisms, and customerservice. Discussion also explores use <strong>of</strong> the media, advertisingand promotion methods, and relationships with business,government, and the community. The integration <strong>of</strong> sponsors,members, and chapters in the total marketing effort is examined.NPMN 650 Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Association Management (3)A study <strong>of</strong> the unique and important niche <strong>of</strong> associationswithin the nonpr<strong>of</strong>it sector. Analysis covers the history <strong>of</strong> associations,political groups, trade lobbying groups, and foundationsin relation to their varying missions, internal capacity,shifting environments, and legal status. NPMN 655 Process and Outcome Evaluation for Nonpr<strong>of</strong>itOrganizations (3)An examination <strong>of</strong> the growing importance <strong>of</strong> process and outcomeevaluation to nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations in supporting theirmissions. Various quantitative and qualitative evaluation strategies,as well as quality and process-improvement methodologies,are explored. Topics include important evaluation concepts suchas validity and reliability <strong>of</strong> various data collection tools, variousapproaches to sampling, and precision <strong>of</strong> results.NPMN 660 Strategic Management in Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Organizationsand Associations (3)(Formerly NPMN 670.) A study <strong>of</strong> the integration and application<strong>of</strong> strategic management principles, concepts, and practicesin nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations. Topics include the development <strong>of</strong>mission statements, goal-setting concepts, and strategy formulationand implementation approaches. Assignments focus ondesigning organizational plans and strategies relevant to thespecific needs <strong>of</strong> organizations.OMDE (Distance Education and E-Learning)OMDE 601 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Distance Education andE-Learning (3)(Developed by Ulrich Bernath <strong>of</strong> Germany and Eugene Rubin<strong>of</strong> the United States, in collaboration with Borje Holmberg<strong>of</strong> Sweden and Otto Peters <strong>of</strong> Germany.) An overview <strong>of</strong> theknowledge, skills, and attitudes that are required by a competentpractitioner <strong>of</strong> distance education. Critical concepts and issuesidentified in the distance education literature are explored andthe history and theories <strong>of</strong> the field are critically examined.OMDE 603 Technology in Distance Education andE-Learning (3)A review <strong>of</strong> the history and the terminology <strong>of</strong> technology usedin distance education. The basic technology building blocks <strong>of</strong>hardware, networks, and s<strong>of</strong>tware are identified. Analysis coversthe characteristics <strong>of</strong> asynchronous and synchronous technologiesand tools used in the teaching and learning, as well as theadministration <strong>of</strong> distance education. The relationship betweentechnology and the goals <strong>of</strong> the educational/training organizationare critically examined. The relationship between informationtechnology (especially online technology) and distanceeducation is explored. Topics include the criteria and guidelinesfor selecting technologies for distance education and the futuredirections <strong>of</strong> technology in distance education.OMDE 606 Costs and Economics <strong>of</strong> Distance Educationand E-Learning (3)(Developed by Thomas Huelsmann <strong>of</strong> Germany.) A study <strong>of</strong>the economics <strong>of</strong> distance education in the larger context <strong>of</strong> theeconomics <strong>of</strong> education. A variety <strong>of</strong> methodological approaches(including cost/benefit and cost/effectiveness analysis) areapplied to the distance education context. A variety <strong>of</strong> costingtechniques and economic models are explored and applied todifferent institutional forms and levels <strong>of</strong> distance education.OMDE 608 Learner Support in Distance Education andTraining (3)An introduction to the theories and concepts <strong>of</strong> support forlearners in distance education and training. The various types<strong>of</strong> learner support—including tutoring and teaching; advisingand counseling; and library, registrar, and other administrativeservices—are examined. Discussion addresses managementissues, such as planning, organizational models, staffing and staffdevelopment, designing services to meet learner needs, servingspecial groups, and evaluation and applied research. Assignmentsinclude designing a learner support model for a particular context(e.g., public or private educational institution or corporateor military training).OMDE 610 Teaching and Learning in Online DistanceEducation (3)An exploration <strong>of</strong> the online teaching and learning dynamic,including its theoretical foundation and best practices. Thethemes that shape the online teaching/learning relationshipare addressed through individual and collaborative projects.Topics include philosophical frameworks; instructional, social,and cognitive presence; interaction, collaboration, and participation;community and engagement; and administrationand management.OMDE 670 Portfolio and Project in Distance Education andE-Learning (3)Prerequisite: Completion <strong>of</strong> at least 27 graduate credits. (FormerlyOMDE 690.) A capstone study <strong>of</strong> distance education andtraining designed to demonstrate cumulative knowledge andskills through two major projects: an electronic portfolio and acase study. The personal e-portfolio documents credentials andaccomplishments to date and also serves as an ongoing resourceand record <strong>of</strong> continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional development.
