Representatives can also make sure that callers are onthe UMUC mailing list to receive upcoming class schedules andother important announcements.Admission AssistanceNew student advisors serve individuals who are inquiring aboutbecoming UMUC students at some future time or are admittedbut have not yet registered. They can help prospective studentsapply for admission, identify financial aid opportunities, plantheir curriculum, and register for their first session <strong>of</strong> classes.New student advisors can also help qualified senior citizensapply for Golden Identification benefits. More detailed information on admissionis available on p. 128.Automated ServicesThrough MyUMUC (available online at https://my.umuc.edu),students have access to many <strong>of</strong> their personal UMUC records.MyUMUC enables them to change personal information (suchas home address, e-mail address, or phone numbers); register;pay bills; check grades and financial aid and student accountstatus; apply for graduation; request certification for VA educationalbenefits and check the status <strong>of</strong> the request; and view andprint reports (such as their class schedule, grade report, statement<strong>of</strong> account, and un<strong>of</strong>ficial transcript).AdvisingAll students who have registered in a course are assigned an advisor,who will help guide them through all <strong>of</strong> the steps that leadto a graduate-level degree or certificate. Advisors will also recommendways for the student to complete academic requirementsquickly and efficiently.Students who have not attended UMUC for a year or moreshould also contact an advisor for assistance in getting backon track. If it has been more than two years since the student’slast enrollment, he or she must first reapply for admission.It is up to the student to seek advising and to keep track <strong>of</strong> hisor her program requirements. Students should retain the catalog<strong>of</strong> the year they entered their program as it contains all degreerequirements for which they will be held accountable.Whenever possible, students should get advising information inwriting. Students who fail to meet all degree requirements willnot be cleared for graduation.Students may contact advisors by phone, fax, or e-mail. In theWashington, D.C., metropolitan area, students also have theoption <strong>of</strong> scheduling an appointment with an advisor in personat the sites listed on the previous page.Evaluation <strong>of</strong> Transfer CreditUp to 6 credits <strong>of</strong> graduate coursework may be considered fortransfer to most graduate degree programs at UMUC if earnedat a regionally accredited institution and if applicable to the student’sprogram <strong>of</strong> study. The Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Managementand Technology may accept up to 3 graduate transfer credits forthe Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration or a certificate program.Students should contact their advisors for details.All graduate credits <strong>of</strong>fered for transfer credit must meet thefollowing criteria:1. The credits must have been earned as graduate credit.2. The credits must not have been used to meet the requirementsfor any degree the student previously earned or isexpected to earn.3. The credits must have been awarded within the time limitfor the degree or certificate.4. The student must have earned a grade <strong>of</strong> B or better in thecourses considered for transfer. (However, these grades arenot included in the calculation <strong>of</strong> the student’s grade pointaverage.)5. The department advisor and the program director musthave determined that the transfer courses are relevant to thestudent’s program <strong>of</strong> study.6. The credits must have been earned at a regionally accreditedinstitution and be equivalent to graduate-level courseworkor recommended for graduate-level credit by the AmericanCouncil on Education (ACE).Services for Students with DisabilitiesReasonable accommodations are available for students who havedisabilities and are enrolled in any program <strong>of</strong>fered at UMUC.To allow for adequate planning, students who need accommodationsshould contact Disability Services at least four to six weeksbefore the beginning <strong>of</strong> the session.w w w.umuc.edu / grad 139
