Formsare available in the graduate schedule <strong>of</strong> classes and online atwww.umuc.edu/register.Students who have employer-provided tuition must be sure t<strong>of</strong>ax their registration and employer contract at the same time.Any fees not covered by the contract must be charged toAmerican Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa.ON-SITEWalk-in admission and registration is held in the AcademicCenter at Largo, in Largo, <strong>Maryland</strong>, and at a number <strong>of</strong> otherlocations in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Studentsmay register for any course <strong>of</strong>fered (regardless <strong>of</strong> locationor format) during regular <strong>of</strong>fice hours.Waiting ListIf a class is already full at the time <strong>of</strong> registration, the student hasthe option <strong>of</strong> placing his or her name on a waiting list for thatclass. Students can check on class availability by visitingMyUMUC at https://my.umuc.edu.■■■■■■■■If a space becomes available, the first student on the waitinglist will automatically be registered for it, and the charge willappear on their account. An e-mail notification <strong>of</strong> the enrollmentfrom the waiting list will be sent. If a space becomesavailable but the first student is ineligible to enroll in the class(for reasons such as failing to meet the prerequisites or beingenrolled in a class that conflicts in time), the space will go tothe next person on the waiting list.Students who no longer want a class should remove theirname from the waiting list to prevent the possibility <strong>of</strong> anautomatic enrollment.Students already enrolled in the maximum number <strong>of</strong> allowablecredits (6 credits) who are on a waiting list for a thirdcourse will not be registered in the third course even if spacebecomes available in the class.Faculty members and academic advisors are not authorized toadd students to a full class.Withdrawals or Dropped CoursesStopping payment on checks for registration fees, or not payingat registration, does not constitute an <strong>of</strong>ficial withdrawal orrelieve the student <strong>of</strong> his or her financial obligation to UMUC.Never attending or ceasing to attend class(es) does not constitutea withdrawal.Students who <strong>of</strong>ficially withdraw from a course receive a mark<strong>of</strong> W (described on p. 133). Graduate students must <strong>of</strong>ficiallywithdraw at least two weeks (14 days) before the final class.Students may withdraw from a course by three methods:■■■■■■Students may access MyUMUC online at https://my.umuc.eduand follow the directions for dropping a course. The use <strong>of</strong>the student and personal identification numbers is considered<strong>of</strong>ficial authorization for the withdrawal, which is effectiveimmediately.Students may complete a withdrawal form request to be processedby an advisor. The withdrawal becomes effective thedate the form is filed with UMUC.Students may request in writing to withdraw from a course orcourses. The letter should specify the course, course number,and section, and include the student’s full name, student IDnumber, and signature. The request should be addressed toGraduate Advising, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>College</strong>,3501 <strong>University</strong> Boulevard East, Adelphi, MD 20783.The postmark on the envelope becomes the <strong>of</strong>ficial date <strong>of</strong>withdrawal. Note: Because the Graduate School <strong>of</strong> Managementand Technology can only honor withdrawal requestsactually received, it is recommended that students ask for areturn receipt from the post <strong>of</strong>fice to ensure that delivery <strong>of</strong>the withdrawal will be acknowledged.In all cases, the student should maintain a copy <strong>of</strong> the transactionfor his or her records.UMUC cannot accept withdrawals verbally over the telephone.Failure to withdraw in the required manner results in the forfeiture<strong>of</strong> any refund and may result in a failing grade. For financialaid recipients, failure to withdraw in the required mannermay result in cancellation/reversal <strong>of</strong> financial aid rewards. Financial InformationTuition and FeesUMUC students are expected to make payment at the time <strong>of</strong>registration. If a student’s payment is not received by the duedate, he or she may be penalized by being disenrolled fromcourses or having his or her account balance transferred to theState Central Collections Unit.Several payment options are available to UMUC students whoare unable to make payment at the time <strong>of</strong> registration. To findout more about payment options, students should visit www.umuc.edu/paymentoptions.Payment may be made by cash, check, money order, or AmericanExpress, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa credit cards. Checksshould be payable to <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>College</strong>.Students who qualify for tuition assistance, financial aid,or veterans benefits should consult the appropriate sections <strong>of</strong>this catalog. Students interested in the monthly payment plan,administered by Sallie Mae, should visit www.tuitionpay.com/umuc on the Web or call 800-635-0120.CURRENT TUITION AND FEESTuition rates and fees are published each session in the graduateschedule <strong>of</strong> classes and are available on the Web at www.umuc.edu/tuition. Students should review the fee schedule carefully tosee which ones apply. Fees are commonly charged for admissionand graduation applications, makeup testing, technology, andtranscripts. There is also a service charge for dishonored checks.RefundsThe <strong>of</strong>ficial date used to determine a refund is either the date thewithdrawal form is hand-delivered to the Information Desk atthe Academic Center at Largo, the date and time the change wasmade in MyUMUC, or the postmark date on a mailed request.The <strong>of</strong>ficial date for federal financial aid recipients is the lastdate <strong>of</strong> class attendance as determined by federal regulations.Note: Students in their first enrollment period with UMUC whoare receiving financial aid (grants, work-study, or loans) andwithdraw from the institution (not merely from a course) beforecompleting 60 percent <strong>of</strong> the enrollment period for which theyhave been charged are subject to a new federal pro-rata refundpolicy. Financial aid advisors can provide further information.REFUND FOR COURSE CANCELLATIONSThe university refunds 100 percent <strong>of</strong> tuition, technology, andregistration fees for courses canceled by the university. The applicationfee is nonrefundable, even when a course is canceled.REFUND FOR STUDENT WITHDRAWALSTuition is refunded as follows:100% Withdrawal before the class start date75% Withdrawal 1–13 calendar days after a class starts50% Withdrawal 14–20 calendar days after a class starts0% Withdrawal 21 or more calendar days after a class startsFees are nonrefundable, with the exception <strong>of</strong> technology fees,which are refundable before the first day <strong>of</strong> class. No refundsare given for technology fees or for tuition for noncredit coursesafter the <strong>of</strong>ficial start date <strong>of</strong> class.Note: This policy applies only to students not receiving federalfinancial aid.Dishonored ChecksFor each paper or electronic check returned to UMUC by thepayer’s bank (whether because <strong>of</strong> insufficient funds, stoppedpayment, postdating, or drawing against uncollected items),UMUC assesses a service charge <strong>of</strong> $30 (over and above anyservice charges levied by the financial institution).A student who stops payment on a check for tuition is therebyneither disenrolled nor relieved <strong>of</strong> responsibility for payingtuition and fees. Anyone whose checks for tuition or fees remaindishonored may be barred from classes.Indebtedness to the <strong>University</strong>Students who incur debts to UMUC must clear them to bepermitted to register. Requests for transcripts and diplomas aredenied until all debts have been paid. Outstanding debts are collectedagainst refunds due the student. After a reasonable period<strong>of</strong> time, uncollected debts are forwarded to the Central CollectionUnit <strong>of</strong> the State Attorney General’s Office.The Board <strong>of</strong> Regents has authorized UMUC to charge students’delinquent accounts for all collection costs incurred by UMUC.The normal collection fee is 17 percent plus attorney and/orcourt costs.
