ACADEMIC AND ADMINISTRATIVEREQUIREMENTSStudents who are absent from class retain responsibility forcompleting any missed coursework, as indicated in the courseoutline. Students are also responsible for obtaining informationabout each class session, including any announcements andassignments they missed. Failure <strong>of</strong> the student to complete anyrequired coursework as scheduled may adversely affect the gradeearned. Faculty are not expected to repeat material that a studentmissed because <strong>of</strong> absence.Students who are not <strong>of</strong>ficially registered for classes are not permittedto sit in on classes.Academic IntegrityIntegrity in teaching and learning is a fundamental principle <strong>of</strong>a university. UMUC believes that all members <strong>of</strong> the universitycommunity share the responsibility for academic integrity, asexpressed in the <strong>University</strong> System <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> (USM) policy“Faculty, Student, and Institutional Rights and Responsibilitiesfor Academic Integrity.” At UMUC, faculty members areexpected to establish classroom environments conducive to themaintenance <strong>of</strong> academic integrity by giving students a completesyllabus describing the course and its requirements, by gradingsubmitted work promptly and adequately, and by arrangingappropriate testing conditions, including having faculty membersmonitor examinations given in class. Students at UMUCare expected to conduct themselves in a manner that willcontribute to the maintenance <strong>of</strong> academic integrity. The USMpolicy is found at www.usmd.edu/regents/bylaws/SectionIII.Academic dishonesty is the failure to maintain academic integrity.Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating; fabrication;bribery <strong>of</strong>fered for grades, transcripts, or diplomas; obtainingor giving aid on an examination; having unauthorized priorknowledge <strong>of</strong> an examination; doing work for another student;presenting another student’s work as one’s own; and plagiarism.Plagiarism is the presentation <strong>of</strong> another person’s idea or productas one’s own. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to the following:copying verbatim all or part <strong>of</strong> another’s written work;using phrases, charts, figures, illustrations, or mathematical orscientific solutions without citing the source; paraphrasing ideas,conclusions, or research without citing the source; or using all orpart <strong>of</strong> a literary plot, poem, film, musical score, or other artisticproduct without attributing the work to its creator.Students can avoid unintentional plagiarism by carefully followingaccepted scholarly practices. Notes taken for papers andresearch projects should accurately record sources <strong>of</strong> material tobe cited, quoted, paraphrased, or summarized, and papers andresearch projects should acknowledge these sources in references.Additional information on UMUC’s policy on Academic Dishonestyand Plagiarism may be viewed at www.umuc.edu/policy.ExaminationsThe student is responsible for obtaining information about quizand examination schedules and policies.Make-up examinations and tests may be given to students wh<strong>of</strong>or valid reasons are unable to take exams at the scheduledtime. Teachers are not required to <strong>of</strong>fer make-up examinationsbecause <strong>of</strong> a student’s absence unless the student can presentevidence that it was caused by unavoidable circumstances oroccurred on a religious holiday. ♦ In such cases, an examinationmay be rescheduled for the mutual convenience <strong>of</strong> student andteacher and must cover only the material for which the studentwas originally responsible. Such a rescheduling must not cause aconflict with the student’s other classes.Course LoadGenerally, graduate students are considered full-time if they areregistered for at least 9 credits per standard session. Graduatestudents who are enrolled in 6 credits per standard session areconsidered half-time.MBA students are considered full-time when they register forat least 6 credits per session in their degree program; those whoregister for 3 credits per session are considered half-time.Doctoral students are considered full-time when they register forat least 6 credits per session in their degree program, half-time ifthey register for 3 credits per session.Students are advised to limit their course loads to conform withthe demands <strong>of</strong> their employment and the time they have to preparefor class. The course load for students who work full-time islimited to 6 credits per session. The course load for students whowork no more than 20 hours a week is 9 credits per session.Full-time students who are not employed or who work fewerthan 20 hours a week (except those in the MBA program) mayask to take additional courses by submitting a request in writingto Graduate Advising.
