Financial Aid ProgramsMost aid programs are available to both full- and part-timestudents. UMUC may <strong>of</strong>fer the following types <strong>of</strong> financial aid:grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans. In most cases, atleast half-time enrollment is required. (Full- and part-time statusis explained on p 136.)Amounts and eligibility for financial aid vary from year to year.Following is a description <strong>of</strong> programs available for the upcomingaward year.GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPSGift assistance, for which no repayment is required, is <strong>of</strong>fered bythe state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> and UMUC. The UMUC Financial AidOffice administers several types <strong>of</strong> gift assistance: UMUC scholarshipsand grants and <strong>Maryland</strong> state scholarships and grants.The UMUC President’s Grant program is awarded to studentswho demonstrate financial need. Typical awards during the2010–11 year will range from $300 to $600 per semester, basedon need.UMUC scholarship programs, which include the UMUC President’sScholarship, <strong>of</strong>fer a number <strong>of</strong> institutional scholarships aswell as scholarships from corporate donors and foundations. Aseparate scholarship application must be completed for consideration.Requirements vary according to the individual scholarshipprograms. Typical awards range from $200 to $1,500 per semester,depending on the specific program. Most scholarships requirea minimum GPA for consideration. Students should visit www.umuc.edu/scholarships for more information.<strong>Maryland</strong> state grant and scholarship programs provide financialassistance to <strong>Maryland</strong> residents based primarily on financialneed. Awards to graduate students typically require enrollment<strong>of</strong> at least 6 credits per semester. Award amounts range from$200 to $5,700 annually. Students should inquireabout scholarship possibilities through organizations with whichthey have an affiliation.LOANSLoan programs are available to students enrolled at least halftimeper semester. Students who take loans to pay for collegeexpenses must repay the principal and interest in accordancewith the terms <strong>of</strong> the promissory note.The Federal Perkins Loan program provides low-interest loansto help needy students finance their costs at UMUC. Awardamounts typically range between $500 and $1,500 per semester.The current interest rate is 5 percent. Repayment is made toUMUC and begins nine months after the borrower leaves schoolor attendance drops below half-time.The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program <strong>of</strong>fers lowinterestfederal loans to students. Repayment begins six monthsafter the student leaves school or attendance drops below halftime.For annual award amounts and general repayment terms,students should visit www.umuc.edu/financialaid.Graduate PLUS and other alternative student loan programs arealso an option for UMUC students. Funds are paid biweekly, based on hours worked.Students must apply and be hired for employment at UMUClocation. Students who do not secure such employment forfeittheir work-study award. If a student failsto meet the minimum requirements during probation, thestudent is denied aid the following semester, and financial aid isnot disbursed and can be canceled.
