Paragraph 1.1 - First steps with Max/MSP
the Documentation Works”, which you will explain how to move between the
many sections and how to find discussions that will be pertinent to your own
needs. We reiterate, though, that while it may be helpful, taking such a tour
is not absolutely necessary for the comprehension of this book. There are also
help patches for all of the individual objects found in Max. When you are in edit
mode, on an object (without dragging), and a help patch relevant
to the clicked object will open. This patch will be fully functional, and will summarize
the principal characteristics of the object. while in edit mode
on the cycle~ object, for example, will bring up the help patch seen in Figure
1.14 (which again may be quite different in different versions of Max/MSP).
Fig. 1.14 A help patch
As you can see, many different characteristics of the cycle~ object are
explained by this patch. A menu at the bottom right of the window under the
See Also label extends the scope of the information, by providing a way to call
up additional help on objects that are related to cycle~, or are often used with
it. Clicking on the items in this menu will open either additional help patches
for related objects, or tutorials in which the target object is used, and which
can be tinkered with to increase your understanding of the object. Another
resource in this window is a link to the reference manual, entitled open cycle~
reference, which can be found at the very top of the help patch on the right.
Clicking on this link will bring up a reference page that explains in great detail
all of the characteristics of the cycle~ object. Such reference pages are very
useful for discovering and/or remembering details needed for your patching
activities. Whether or not you read the deeper explanatory material contained
in a help patch such as this one, we still recommend that you take a peek! They
are working patches that can teach a great deal about the practical techniques
and specialized vocabulary used in Max.
