Lifewater Canada: The SolutionA Local Presence: Lifewater helpspeople help themselves. We empowerlocal people rather than doing the workand leaving. Wherever possible, lifewater partners with in-countryorganizations who have experiencewith water projects. Our focus isproviding the equipment, knowledgeand training they need to solve theircommunities water problems.Self-sufficiency: Lifewater works tobreak the cycle of long-termdependence on foreign donors byteaching local businesses how to make parts and equipment in-country.By balancing work-for-profit with work-for-aid, we strive to make localwater crews economically self-sufficient within five years.Active Community Participation: For water projects to be successfulin the long-term, communities must be united in their desire to improvetheir water supply. People must be willing to work together and give oftheir time, energy & resources. Communities must take ownership ofwater projects by asking for a hand, not a hand-out. Careful attentionmust be given to women and men's perspectives/needs with respect towater access & use (see "Women, Men and Water-ResourceManagement in Africa")Lifewater works with community leaders to develop a Water SupplyAgreement which specifies details of local involvement. Usersparticipate in the design and construction of the water system, establishrules for its use, perform routine maintenance and raise funds for theannual maintenance service.http://www.lifewater.ca/lif_stra.htm (2 of 3) [1/13/2005 12:44:08 PM]
