Tech Gallery - Treadle PumpFrenchSpanishThe Treadle Pump consists of two metal cylinderswith pistons that are operated by a natural walkingmotion on two treadles. The pump can bemanufactured locally in simple metalworkingshops. The treadles and support structure aremade of bamboo or other inexpensive, locallyavailable material. It is easily maintained withstandard replacement parts available in localmarkets at a low cost. The efficient step-actionoperation makes it possible to pump the largevolumes of water necessary for irrigation. Allhousehold members are able to operate the pump, allowing farmers to makeefficient use of family labour.The pump's low cost makes it accessible to even very poor farmers who can use itto grow dry-season vegetables for home consumption and for sale. On average,farmers are able to generate more than US$100 per year in extra income.
