Appendix R: Community Water Supply AgreementAppendix RVillage Well AgreementPrior to work beginning in a new village, community leaders must signa water supply agreement which specifies community involvementincluding:1. an agreed upon financial contribution towards project cost.2. In poor communities which have little money, some goods andservices can be contributed instead (coconuts, dry fish, palmbutter, mangoes, charcoal etc). However, we have learned thatsome cash payment (even $50 or $100) must still be required.Money can usually be raised for funerals for people who diedfrom drinking contaminated water. Raising and giving cashmoney for a safe drinking water supply is an important sign ofcommittment. For villagers to carry produce to market, sell it,and then hand over the money is a critical step towardscommunities taking ownership of their new water supply.Handpumps are rarely broken in communities which have payedmoney towards the project. They helped buy it, they help care forit. Conversely, hand pumps are frequently not working forextended periods of time in villages which did not contribute cashmoney... as the villagers grow frustrated with Lifewater for notcoming to "fix our handpump that we planted in theircommunity";3. continuous night time security for all equipment and supplies. Ifitems are stolen, the project will be terminated;4. continuous supplies of clean water for drilling fluid. Hours andquantities which must be carried to the drill site are specifiedsince disruptions to the supply of water can lead to seriousdrilling problems;http://www.lifewater.ca/Appendix_R.htm (1 of 2) [1/13/2005 12:45:17 PM]
