APPENDIX VIISTUDY AND EXAMINATION TECHNIQUESThis appendix contains notes on:a. Using the questions <strong>and</strong> answers provided in the manual;b. Effective study; <strong>and</strong>c. Examination technique.7.1 Questions <strong>and</strong> answersIntroduction1. Two types <strong>of</strong> questions are provided in this manual.a. Questions set at the end <strong>of</strong> chapters with answers provided in Appendix 1b. Questions with answers set in Appendix 2Questions with answers2. <strong>The</strong>se questions are eithera. intended to test the underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the points arising out <strong>of</strong> the particularchapter; orb. inserted at a stage where it is considered the student will be best able togive a reasonable answer.3. Most answers are given in outline but some examination answers go a little furtherin order to provide greater guidance <strong>and</strong> provide students with the basis forstudy.4. When answers are comprehensive, you could not be expected to write them in thetime allowed. Do not worry if you feel you could not write such answers; you arenot expected to. But you must grasp the main points or principles involved whichwill form the basis for good marks in an examination.5. Do not worry if your answer differs, there is <strong>of</strong>ten more than one approach. Youmust satisfy yourself however, that it is only the approach that differs, <strong>and</strong> thatyou have not missed the fundamental principles.6. Authors’ Comments. <strong>The</strong>se have been included to give additional points or elaborateon matters arising out <strong>of</strong> the subject covered by the question to which it is felt youshould give some thought.Using the answers7. Have a shot at each question yourself before consulting the answer, you willachieve nothing if you do not do this. Write your answer out in full or jot down themain points. Do not hurry to the answer.8. Look at the answer. (See para 5 in the case <strong>of</strong> examination answers). Study theparticular area thoroughly now making sure <strong>of</strong> your underst<strong>and</strong>ing. Repeat theprocess outlined in para 7 <strong>and</strong> this paragraph after a suitable interval. You mustdo this to get any benefit at all. Make sure the main points stick.9. Just browsing through the answers will really get you nowhere. You must testyourself by writing down your version <strong>of</strong> the answer.299
