RS422 is a balanced data format. Simplex RS422 requires three dataconnections (+/- and ground). Full-duplex RS422 requires fi ve dataconnections (in+/in-, out+/out- and ground).RS485 is used for full-multipoint communications where multipletransceiver devices may be connected to a single twisted-pair signalcable. Most RS485 systems use a Master/Slave architecture, whereeach Slave unit has a unique address and responds only to packetsaddressed to that unit. Packets are generated by the Master (e.g. CCTVcontroller keyboard), which periodically ‘polls’ all connected Slave units(e.g. CCTV camera receiver units). The Slave unit that has beenaddressed then sends the appropriate reply packet back to the Master.Slave units have no means of initiating communication without the riskof a collision so they need to be assigned the ‘right to transmit’ by theMaster (by polling). Data termination and biasingThe hardware support for RS-data line termination and biasing isavailable from version F onwards for all MPC encoders/decoders andMPX E8 encoders. The MPX D8 decoder does not have this support.Termination is used to match impedance of a node to the impedance ofthe transmission line being used. When impedance are mismatched, thetransmitted signal is not completely absorbed by the load and a portionis refl ected back into the transmission line.
