01 I ContextRow apartmentsRow apartments are generally well suited toboth urban and suburban contexts. They arecharacterised by a limited number of unitsarranged around an access core and can be singlebuildings or a series of building modules. Thisbuilding type is best used when:Row apartments are a modular buildingtype, highly adaptable and able to respondwell to sloping sitesShop top apartments• smaller building footprints are desirable• live work apartments or commercial/ retailuses are encouraged at the ground floor level• continuation of the street edge is desirable• a vertical rhythm reinforcing existingsubdivision or building patterns is desirable• rear landscape areas are desired includingkeeping existing significant trees• built form needs to step down the street torespond to a slopeNShop top apartments are mixed use residentialbuildings often located in established centres,along main streets or close to public transporthubs. They can be small infill or largerdevelopments where the ground floor is occupiedby retail or commercial uses.
