03 I Siting3H Vehicle accessThe location, type and design of vehicle access pointshave significant impacts on the streetscape, the sitelayout and the building facade design. It is important thatvehicle access is integrated with site planning from anearly stage to balance any potential conflicts with trafficpatterns, streetscape elements and safe pedestrianaccess.Figure 3H.1 The impact of vehicle access points on the street can beminimised by locating them on secondary frontagesFigure 3H.2 Clear sightlines help to keep pedestrians safe. Performance criteria3H-1Vehicle access points are designed and located toachieve safety and high quality streetscapesAcceptable solutions03 I Siting1. Car park access is integrated with the building’soverall facade, design solutions may include:• the materials and colour palette minimisevisibility from the street• security doors or gates at entries that minimisevoids in the facade• where doors are not provided, the visible interiorreflects the facade design and the buildingservices, pipes and ducts are concealed2. Car park entries are located behind the building line3. Vehicle entries are located at the lowest point ofthe site minimising ramp lengths, excavation andimpacts on the building form and layout4. Car park entry and access is located on secondarystreets or lanes where availableFigure 3H.3 The visual impact of vehicle entries can be minimised by anoffset alignment of the driveway and screen planting5. Vehicle standing areas that increase driveway widthand encroach into setbacks are avoided6. Access point locations avoid headlight glare tohabitable rooms7. Adequate separation distances are providedbetween vehicular entries and street intersections8. The width of vehicle access points is limited to theminimum9. Visual impact of long driveways is minimisedthrough changing alignments and screen planting10.
