A number of the following design features areused:• shading devices such as eaves awnings,balconies, pergolas, external louvres andplanting• horizontal shading to north facing windows• vertical shading to east and particularly westfacing windows• balconies or sun shading that extend farenough to shade summer sun, but allow wintersun to penetrate living areas• operable shading to allow adjustment andchoice, where possible and appropriate• high performance glass that minimises externalglare off windows, with consideration given toreduced tint glass or glass with a reflectancelevel below 20%• Reflective films are avoidedPerformance criteria4L-4Opportunities for improved daylight are providedwhere sunlight is limitedFigure 4L.8Trees help shade building facades. For east and west facingfacades consider planting deciduous speciesAcceptable solutions1. Light wells, skylights and high level windows (withsills of 1500mm or greater) are used only as asecondary light source in habitable rooms2. Where light wells are unavoidable:• use is restricted to kitchens, bathrooms andservice areas• building services are concealed withappropriate detailing and materials to visiblewalls• lightwells are fully open to the sky• access is provided to the lightwell from acommunal area for cleaning and maintenance• acoustic privacy, fire safety and minimumprivacy separation distances (see section 3FVisual Privacy) are achievedFigure 4L.9Light wells can provide for daylight access to common areas.For habitable rooms of apartments, they should only be usedas a secondary light source3.
