03 I Siting3J Bicycle and car parkingIntegrating car parking within apartment buildings has asignificant impact on site planning, landscape and buildingdesign. On site parking can be located underground,above ground within a structure or at grade.The location, form and organisation of parking is usuallya balance of development feasibility, site constraints,local context, apartment types and regulatory car parkingrequirements, e.g. council car parking rates. Deep soilzones, stormwater management and the retention of treescan also affect the size and shape of a car park footprint.Parking requirements should be determined in relationto the availability, frequency and convenience of publictransport. Reduced requirements promote a reduction incar dependency and encourage walking, cycling and useof public transport. Provision of parking for alternativeforms of transport such as car share vehicles, motorcyclesand bicycles should also be considered.
