3.4 Joining and Displaying Marxan Output3.4.2 Joining Marxan Output FilesNow let’s view the results using ArcMap by joiningthe new output Marxan files “run_name_best.txt”and “run_name_ssoln.txt” with the planning unitsID. The planning unit ID acts as the common key tojoin these text files. To do this, click on the Join andDisplay Marxan Output menu item. This will bringup a new dialog box and you must specify thePlanning Unit feature class, the Planning Unit IDfield, the Marxan output file you wish to join, andthe name of the join field, and the new output fieldwhich will store the new information. You will haveto run this routine twice: once for the “run_name_best.txt” (Field Name should beSOLUTION), and another time for the “run_name_ ssoln.txt” (Field Name should beNUMBER). The SOLUTION refers to which planning units actually made it into thefinal portfolio. Planning units assigned the number 1 are included, those assigned a 0 areexcluded. The NUMBER refers to how many times the planning unit was chosen basedon the total numbers of runs that were specified. For example, if you entered 200 runs,and a planning unit’s NUMBER field is assigned 153, then that planning unit was chosen153 times out of the 200 runs. The NUMBER is also often referred to as a level ofirreplaceability.When you join the planning unit ID field withthe text files, a new field is created in theplanning unit feature class and the results aredisplayed in the map view. Planning unitswith a value of zero (0) are excluded from theclassification.
