Nerve Injuries(Recurrent and Superior Laryngeal Nerve)During thyroidectomy the external branch <strong>of</strong> the superiorlaryngeal nerve (EBSLN) and the recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN) are at risk. Nerve injuries may be temporary orpermanent. The incidence <strong>of</strong> transient temporary RLN injuryis around 5% and permanent injury occurs in 2% to 3% <strong>of</strong>cases in most series. The most important cause <strong>for</strong> permanentRLN injury is division <strong>of</strong> the nerve. In malignant thyroiddisease every attempt is made to preserve a functioning nerve.However, occasionally the nerve may be sacrificed, if thedisease cannot be dissected <strong>of</strong>f the nerve and if it is the onlysite <strong>of</strong> residual disease.Surgical ConsiderationsKnowledge <strong>of</strong> anatomy and meticulous surgical techniques isa must. Proper identification <strong>of</strong> nerves during surgery isdocumented to reduce the incidence <strong>of</strong> damage to thesestructures 1 .191
