Genetic predisposition – some preliminary work suggestsa possibility that some individuals are more prone <strong>for</strong>development <strong>of</strong> mucositis than others.Prevention and treatment <strong>of</strong> mucositis anddiarrhea-Advancements in terminology and in the assessment <strong>of</strong> AM inpatients receiving cytoreductive cancer therapies have resultedin better patient management practices and enhanced drugdevelopment to reduce toxicity. Several attempts are inprogress to develop models <strong>for</strong> assessing risk <strong>of</strong> mucositis inany given patient. The Mucositis Study Group <strong>of</strong> theMultinational Association <strong>of</strong> Supportive Care in <strong>Cancer</strong>(MASCC) and the International Society <strong>for</strong> Oral Oncology(ISOO) have developed the guidelines based on availableevidence <strong>for</strong> prevention and treatment <strong>of</strong> chemotherapyassociated mucositis which were first published in 2004 andhave been updated in 2007.To prevent the development <strong>of</strong> oral mucositis followingstandard chemotherapy following methods have beensuggested -1. Basic oral care, its importance in maintaining mucosalhealth, integrity, and function is well accepted. Thepurpose <strong>of</strong> basic oral care is to reduce the impact <strong>of</strong> theoral microbial flora, reduce cancer therapy–relatedsymptoms <strong>of</strong> pain and bleeding, and prevent s<strong>of</strong>t tissueinfections that may have systemic sequelae. In addition,maintenance <strong>of</strong> good oral hygiene will reduce the risk<strong>of</strong> dental complications, including caries and gingivitis.For these reasons, basic oral care is an importantcomponent <strong>of</strong> care <strong>of</strong> the patient with cancer The457
