<strong>Complications</strong> Associated with use <strong>of</strong>Chemotherapy Agents <strong>for</strong> <strong>Treatment</strong> <strong>of</strong>Head and Neck <strong>Cancer</strong>sIntroductiono The current indications <strong>for</strong> chemotherapy in head neckcancers includeodefinitive concurrent chemoradiation (<strong>for</strong> organpreservation or in unresectable tumors), -(LOE-1)o post-operative adjuvant chemoradiation 2,3 (in caseswith perinodal extension or close margins) -(LOE-1)o and neoadjuvant triplet based chemotherapy inselected cases <strong>of</strong> unresectable locally advancedhead neck cancers. 4,5 – (LOE-2) and borderlineresectable cases – (LOE-5)Chemotherapy has been shown to provide survivaladvantage in the above- mentioned scenariosDrugs used –o Drugs which are commonly used in treatment <strong>of</strong> headand neck cancer include cisplatin, carboplatin,5-fluorouracil, docetaxel, paclitaxel and ifosfamide.251
