Swallowing Dysfunction after <strong>Treatment</strong><strong>for</strong> the Oro-Hypopharynx and LarynxIncidence Following Chemoradiotherapy (CTRT): 15- 50% Following total laryngectomy- 10-60% Swallowing is worse with CTRT as compared to totallaryngectomy (LOE-3) Combination <strong>of</strong> radiotherapy and surgery <strong>for</strong> the larynxsignificantly increases swallowing problems as comparedto surgery alone Gastrostomy tube dependence is seen in nearly 15-30%<strong>of</strong> patients after treatment <strong>for</strong> oro-hypopharyngealcancers Aspiration has been reported in 28-68% <strong>of</strong> patientstreated with CTRT in various studies. Most <strong>of</strong> thisaspiration is silent and can be made out only onvide<strong>of</strong>luroscopy or on a Modified Barium Swallow(MBS). Detecting aspiration is important as this maylead to aspiration pneumonitis in a small percentage <strong>of</strong>patients.218
