Chapter One serves asa theoretical background introducing the basics of the model adopted forthe analysis proper. Moreover, in order to prepare the ground for theanalysis in Chapter Two and Three, we discuss briefly the evolution ofthe word-boundary marker ‘#’ in phonological theory concentrating onthe traditional problem of disjunctivity. In the second part of ChapterOne we point to major drawbacks of theories relying on the SonoritySequencing Principle with the conclusion that the sonority-based theoriesmust be abandoned. Additionally, it is shown here that languagesfall into two general groups and the division is based on the word-initialconsonant clusters. In order to understand this divergent behaviour oflanguages, we look more deeply at the traditional branching onsets inPolish and Czech. Finally, it is demonstrated that branching onsets arein fact two onsets separated by the empty nucleus. The consonants associatedwith such onsets are able to contract a governing relation which ishead final. The representation of branching onsets together with the ideaof the active/inactive character of the initial empty CV unit explains whylanguages allow for different word-initial consonant sequences. ChapterTwo provides some evidence for the inactive character of the initial emptyCV unit in Polish. It is pointed out that the (in)active character of theinitial site plays a pivotal role both in syllabification and phonologicalprocessing. We provide a detailed analysis of Polish trapped consonantsand compare them with their close cognates, that is, syllabic consonantsin other Slavic languages. Finally, we offer a solution to the developmentof soft labials in one of the north-eastern dialects of Polish, that is, theKurp dialect. The findings are additionally confirmed by a similar processin the history of French. All the evidence collected in this chapterpoints to a single conclusion, that is, that the empty CV unit is not activein Polish. Chapter Three deals with three apparently unrelated phenomena,namely, syllabic consonants, bogus clusters and vowel syncope inEnglish. Since the former two structures also appear in closely relatedGerman, they are discussed in relation to both languages. It is demonstratedthat all three phenomena have the same origin and stem fromthe expansionist behaviour of sonorants as a reaction to the positionalweakness. Finally, the absence of bogus clusters and vowel syncope fromthe left margin of the word is explained by the presence of the initialempty CV unit. This observation further confirms the original assumptionof the active character of the initial site in English and German.The present study is a revised version of my doctoral dissertation.I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people who have had
