This extra ability of the wordfinalempty nuclei may be ascribed to the fact that they function as wordboundaries pretty much the same as the word-initial empty CV unitwe argued for in the previous chapter. 18 Moreover, the governing abilityof final empty nuclei is confirmed by the existence of the word-final RT#or TT# clusters, e.g. alt ‘old’, herb ‘bitter’, Dorf ‘village’, or Abt ‘abbot’.The forms end in a consonant cluster which must be separated by anempty nucleus. This simply means that the word-final empty nucleusis able to govern it. Thus, it follows that both possibilities representedunder (20) are plausible.
