oth directions for the more experienced researchers. Each ofthe researchers involved has expanded their research careerhorizons as a result of Target-Breast.For future applicants, Professor Gallagher offers some words ofwisdom: for principal investigators and future coordinators, MarieCurie is an excellent bottom-up programme to initiate newcollaborations between academic and industrial partners,as well as consolidate pre-existing interactions. Given thecomplexity of reporting, he would encourage applicants toensure that all partners are fully committed for the duration ofthe project, and will contribute in an active way to progressthe research. ‘In our case, we were lucky to have excellentpartners in this respect, but certainly problems can arise ifapplicants are not suffi ciently aware of the potential pitfallsalong the way. I was also fortunate to have a close colleague,Mr Steve Penney, who provided signifi cant support in termsof project management, particularly in respect to fi nancialmatters and reporting.’What lies ahead for Professor Gallagher? He is ‘very keen’on bringing the outcomes of the research closer to clinicalutility over the coming years. One key focus will be a uniqueapproach for automatically quantifying cancer biomarkers viathe sophisticated image analysis approach further advancedby Target-Breast. It now requires further validation on multiplecancer and marker types, as well as building into a frameworkthat is convenient to use for pathologists and other researchers.Project acronymTarget-BreastFull project titleTarget-Breast – Breast cancer biomarkers and functionalmediators: harnessing the new wealth of –omic dataType of grantIndustry Academia PartnershipBudgetEUR 622 995Duration of project13-02-2006 - 13-02-2010Scientific disciplineLife sciencesHost institutionUniversity College DublinProf. William GallagherVice-Principal of Research and Innovation, UCD College of Life SciencesAssociate Professor of Cancer Biology, UCD School of Biomolecularand Biomedical ScienceConway Fellow, UCD Conway InstituteUCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, UCD Conway InstituteUniversity College DublinIE-Dublin 4Tel. +353 1 7166 743 // Fax +353 1 2837 211E-mail: william.gallagher@ucd.ie139
