The collaborations were characterisedby strong teamwork and a readiness to share experienceand resources.Coastal research in the limelightResearch on marine waves and coastal processes becameone of the focal points of the CENS-CMA project, coveringabout one-third of the fellowship months, and resulting inthe establishment of the Wave Engineering Laboratory inJanuary 2009.Dr Tarmo Soomere, a member of the Estonian Academy ofSciences, was one of the fi rst CENS Fellows to study at the CMAin Oslo. During the project he was elected ‘Estonia’s Person ofthe Year 2005’ by the newspaper Postimees for predicting andexplaining the effects of the storm Gudrun, one of the mostsevere storms to hit the Baltic Sea in recent history. The <strong>Marie</strong><strong>Curie</strong> project, he says, opened up the scientifi c community inEstonia and helped scientists to communicate with the publicabout their research.‘Longer stays in such centres are an almost mandatory experiencefor everybody who wishes to be successful in cutting-edgescience,’ asserts Dr Soomere. ‘This is particularly importantfor the younger generation of researchers who tend to focuson a narrow range of problems or a single object of study.’The benefi ts of communicating effectively with the public canbe reaped when lead researchers are able to organise researchin their own communities, explains Dr Soomere. ‘This is exactlymy case: the experience gathered as a CENS-CMA Fellowturned out to be indispensable in launching both theteaching and research of port and coastal engineeringin Tallinn,’ he adds, referring to the new Laboratory of WaveEngineering in the Institute of Cybernetics, of which he tookon the task of leader.Good news travels fast … and farThe project enjoyed the attention of the press: some of theFellows’ work was covered in newspaper articles. Other grantrecipients gave public lectures, which were well received, andthe partners conducted a summer school on coastal processes.234
The school was covered in a 15-minute feature on the popularscience television programme Bionina, produced by the Estoniannational broadcasting company ETV.The CENS-CMA research collaboration also welcomedscientists from further afi eld: Dr Kevin Parnell, based at theJames Cook University in Australia, spent three months as aSenior Fellow in Tallinn.‘The time I spent at the CENS department in Tallinn enabledme to research vessel wakes and their environmental effects,’says Dr Parnell. ‘I was able to foster collaborations in apart of the world where it is uncommon for Australians toconduct research. I am now applying the knowledge I gainedto projects in Australia and New Zealand, where issues relatedto vessel wakes in confi ned coastal waters remain.
