CENS-CMAAs the Estonian coastline continues to attract more tourists, increasing numbers of scientists are trying tounderstand its complex environment. The country’s coastline represents a new frontier in scientific research, beingthe focus of several new collaborations. A Marie Curie-sponsored project between the Centre for Nonlinear Studiesin Tallinn and the Centre of Mathematics for Applications in Oslo is taking forward the science of coastal engineering.
Coastal research onthe crest of a waveThe extensive Estonian coastline is home to more than athousand islands, many of which host nature reserves anddraw in visitors from all over the world. Understanding theimpact of construction in the coastal zone and of heavyshipping traffi c is crucial for the preservation of the region’snatural resources and for ensuring that efforts to develop thearea are sustainable. Little is known of the region’s particularcoastal environment because, in the past, Soviet policy keptcivilians from accessing the coastline for military reasons. Fordecades, coastal research and education were discouraged,and science stagnated.When Estonia regained its independence in 1991, researchersgot back to work building a comprehensive knowledge basein an effort to better understand the complex interactionsbetween ship wakes, waves, beach erosion and other factorsalong Estonia’s vast coastlines.Rebuilding coastal engineering knowledge, research andeducation is a monumental task, but researchers at theCentre for Nonlinear Studies (CENS), founded in 1999 withinthe Institute of Cybernetics at Tallinn University of Technology,took up the challenge.Internationalising wave scienceSupported by a Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge scheme,CENS joined forces with the University of Oslo’s Centre ofMathematics for Applications (CMA) in Norway for a researchprogramme in applied wave mathematics.The Transfer of Knowledge scheme fi nancially supported visitingFellows’ extended research stays at both CENS in Tallinnand the CMA in Oslo. These fellowships could last anywherebetween two months and two years, and were granted to either‘experienced’ researchers (usually postdocs with between4 and 9 years of research experience) or ‘senior’ researchers(with 10 years of research experience or more).At work on the CENS-CMA project233
