network institutes have allowed the young researchersto be in close contact with experts on several differentresearch topics and have provided them with thoroughtraining in key experimental and theoretical aspects ofparticle physics. This training and the visibility that the youngresearchers enjoy within a large international collaboration areessential ingredients for developing the profi le of researcherswho will take up leadership roles in European science in thedecades to come.’Fellows in demandThe Artemis scientists have made signifi cant contributions toraising the Higgs discovery potential within the ATLAS experiment. The impressive positions and titles the Marie Curie Fellows havebeen given are just one indication of how highly they are valued.Equally remarkable are the novel techniques for detecting theHiggs boson put forward by the Artemis Fellows. They havealready been recognised as unprecedented. As a result of the Marie Curie project’s success, invitationsto give presentations at ATLAS meetings and internationalconferences have been streaming into the inboxes of ArtemisFellows. This high-level exposure will certainly broaden careerprospects. Indeed, this can already be seen: while many of theFellows are still working under their original contracts, thosewhose contracts have expired have all continued in otherhigh-level posts in particle physics.Italian Bruno Lenzi, currently completing his PhD thesis withArtemis, may well follow a similar path. ‘The subject of my PhDresearch was relevant to my previous experience and wasalso challenging given the huge quantity of new information.I gave a tutorial at the Paris meeting, and could also presentmy experience of the subject both in my home institute and ina general ATLAS meeting. I greatly appreciate the opportunitiesgiven by the network, in terms of training and interaction withother members, and also the possibility I had to present thework in an international conference,’ he acknowledges.Physicists of the futureThe project’s success has meant that the partners havedecided to apply for a Marie Curie Network grant in order62
