The above learnings proved invaluable for Dr Caranti whenhe edited a book entitled Kant’s Perpetual Peace. NewInterpretative Essays. This collection of essays was compiledby Kant scholars and helps to advance our understanding ofdemocratic peace theory.Appreciate the subtletiesOne prominent scholar who inspired Dr Caranti into undertakinghis current research and who he hopes to collaborate with in thefuture is Michael Doyle. He interpreted a 200-year absence ofconfl icts between democracies as striking evidence in favour ofKant’s theory. Professor Doyle’s claim sparked one of the mostimportant research fi elds in the social sciences – DemocraticPeace Theory (DPT) – which sits at the intersection of politicalphilosophy, political science and international relations. The current general consensus is that democracies haverarely fought between themselves. Fighting between scholarsis still in full swing, however, as they are far from agreeing onan interpretation to account for this phenomenon. Those ofa liberal orientation view it as evidence that Kant’s project isboth sound and in the process of being implemented. Othersdeny or strongly play down the signifi cance of each of thethree Kantian claims.‘My research wants to cure these disparities through a betterunderstanding of the subtleties of Kant’s original insight,’ saysDr Caranti.Have no fearDr Caranti believes that being 100 % clear on research objectivesand a project’s potential to be groundbreaking helps in the search fora good supervisor and host institution. ‘One should not be scaredto ask the most important scholars in your fi eld,’ he comments.‘They are likely to be happy to receive a new researcher at no cost.’Project acronymKaprowFull project titleKant and the problem of warType of grantIntra-European Individual FellowshipBudgetca.
