to signifi cantly change the way PhD training in sound andvibration is carried out at European level. There have alreadybeen some interesting discussions on the way researchersare selected, trained and taught how to write their thesis andpresent their PhD to examiners.Sounding offPerhaps the most important indicator of EDSVS’s success isits alumni, who have time and time again paid testament to itseffectiveness and impact. One such former Fellow is SusanaQuirós y Alpera from Spain who comments: ‘The EDSVSprogramme has given me the opportunity to make good useof the facilities of the prestigious Acoustic Department at theTechnical University of Denmark. I also had the chance to followlessons on acoustics, and my supervisor gave me his supportand advice as and when needed. During my visit, I also had theopportunity to write various papers related to my thesis and toattend the 17th International Congress on Acoustics in Rome.’For Professor Gardonio, the ultimate indicator of a doctorate’ssuccess is what its past Fellows do once it is fi nished. ‘FormerEDSVS Fellows already have extremely interesting andpromising careers which clearly underlines the importanceof this programme,’ he says. ‘There are many who are nowemployed in the country they visited during their EDSVSfellowship. Others are working in research and some have movedto industry and have quickly reached important positions withinthe company. I am very proud of all of them,’ he concludes.Yes, it is good to listen.Project acronymEDSVSFull project titleEuropean doctorate in sound and vibration studiesType of grantTraining NetworkBudgetEUR 2 875 343Duration of project01-10-2004 - 30-09-2008Scientific disciplineEngineeringLead partnerInstitute of Sound and Vibration ResearchUniversity RoadGB-Southampton S017 1BJ(Coordinator: Prof. Paolo Gardonio, pg@isvr.soton.ac.uk )Other partnersUniversità di Ferrara / Dipartimento di Ingegneria (DI-UF), Italy -Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA), France - KatholiekeUniversiteit Leuven / Department of Mechanical Engineering, Division PMA (KUL),Belgium - Trinity College Dublin / Mechanical Engineering Department, ParsonsBuilding, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland - Technical University of Denmark /Acoustic Technology, Oersted DTU (DTU), Denmark - Technical University of Berlin/ Institute of Technical Acoustics (TUB), Germany - Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan/ MWL, The Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research,Department of Aeronautic and Vehicle Engineering (KTH), Sweden347
