existing ones with international scientists and institutesof seismology and engineering across the world,’ he says. These collaborations have created an impressive network, whichmet in Iceland for the fi rst International Symposium on Strong-Motion Earthquake Effects. This inaugural gathering was heldon 29 May 2009, exactly one year on from the Ölfus earthquakenear Hveragerdi, where the IceArray came into its own.It is not only experts in seismology who have taken noticeof Dr Halldorsson’s fi ndings – the public has also expressedan interest in the IceArray. Moreover, Dr Halldorsson and theEERC have made regular appearances in the media to presentthe fi ndings. As part of the new project, ‘The Ölfus earthquake will berepresented by the Specifi c Barrier Model and the strongmotionrecordings will be replicated. Their parameters will becompared with recent earthquakes in Iceland as well as withthe worldwide dataset of near-fault motions. Interestingly, theIceArray data shows us in great detail, second by second, how the earthquake ground motion relocated the town ofHveragerdi, so that it came to rest around 20 cm furthernorth-west from where the town was located before theearthquake,’ says Dr Halldorsson. And so the scientist’s journey continues. The coming three yearswill see him building on what he has already achieved. In fact, hewas recently awarded a research grant by the Icelandic Centrefor Research (Rannis) for a project further exploring ‘The Ölfusearthquake of 29 May 2008 in South Iceland’. The data arebeing comprehensively analysed to reveal the nature of the faultrupture, as well as the locations, dynamics and complexities ofthe two earthquake faults.Project acronymIceArrayFull project titleIcelandic strong-motion arrayType of grantInternational Reintegration GrantBudgetEUR 80 000Duration of project08-08-2006 - 07-08-2008Scientific disciplineEnvironmentHost institutionEarthquake Engineering Research CentreUniversity of IcelandAusturvegur 2aIS-800 SelfossTel. +354 525 4141 // Fax +354 525 4140http://www.eerc.hi.is323
