The cancer stem cell hypothesis predicts that only a tinysubpopulation of cancer cells has a tumorigenic potential, asopposed to the more traditional view, according to which allcancer cells can develop into tumours. Identifying the rightscenario is, therefore, essential, as Dr Quintana points out. ‘Itis extremely important to know whether we need to target allcancer cells or a rare subpopulation.’If all cancer cells have the potential to develop into tumours, thenit is essential that therapy does not leave a single cancer cellalive. If it is only a tiny minority of cancer cells that develop intotumours as the cancer stem cell hypothesis predicts, then thechallenge is to identify that rare population in order to specifi callytarget and eliminate it. ‘Both scenarios are challenging, butanti-cancer therapy will be addressed in a very different waydepending on which one holds to be true. Our work suggeststhat to cure human melanoma we need to eliminate all cancercells,’ notes Dr Quintana.Research on an international stageDr Quintana wishes to use her Marie Curie Fellowship as anopportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience thatshe can use back in Europe for the remaining year of herfellowship to help build up her career back in Europe. She willspend the fi nal year at the University of Valencia.‘Dr Morrison is a bright, young, enthusiastic scientist who hastaught me how to think critically and work extremely carefully. Itis a big lab full of talented postdocs and graduate researchers,’she enthuses. ‘One of the goals of my postdoc was to build upa competitive CV and I think I am accomplishing it.’One major new addition to her CV was an article on her workpublished in the prestigious journal Nature. ‘The article wasselected by the editor for the front cover of the 4 December2008 issue and has been highlighted in many other scientifi cjournals. Consequently, this work has drawn a great deal ofattention from the international and national press,’ she points out.190
