practical problems, many of which remain to be solved, despiteextensive recent research,’ he comments.His specifi c project dealt with the design and analysis ofmethods for enhancing the effi ciency of wireless networks. ‘Dueto special characteristics of these networks, the project dealtwith architectures and algorithms that are optimised acrossmultiple layers of the networking protocol stack,’ he explains.Dr Zussman developed a novel protocol or mode ofcommunication between wireless devices. Using this newprotocol, wireless devices are able to send informationpackets to one another more effi ciently. Through his research,he showed that this protocol increases the average rate ofsuccessful message delivery over a communication channelby 100 % compared to existing algorithms.Engineering excellenceDr Zussman’s background in industrial engineering, economics,operations research and electrical engineering enabled himto bring a unique set of skills to bear on a complex problem.Before his Marie Curie Fellowship he had worked largely in Israel,receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Technionin the 1990s, obtaining his PhD in electrical engineering fromthe same place in 2004. As part of his Marie Curie Fellowship,he worked as a research Fellow back in Israel in the Technion’sDepartment of Electrical Engineering from 2007.During his Marie Curie research, Dr Zussman was also awardeda Fulbright scholarship, a highly prestigious fellowship awardedto postdoctoral scholars wishing to take part in an academicexchange programme within the United States. Each year, only10 Israeli postdoctoral scholars are eligible. During this time,he presented the results of his team’s research on throughputmaximisation in wireless networks at Sigmetrics, a major scientifi cmeeting of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM),and received a ‘Best Paper’ award – no mean feat as only14 % of papers submitted were accepted for the conference.Together with a team of four other researchers, Dr Zussmanrecently built on the results of his fellowship research, thistime focusing on active networked tags for disaster-recoveryapplications. Their work won fi rst place in the VodafoneFoundation Wireless Innovation Project competition. In addition,326
he recently received a Young Investigator Award from the USA’sDefense Threat Reduction Agency.Robust, reliable, resilientDr Zussman continues to improve wireless networks. His currentresearch team is focusing on fi ve projects: energy-harvestingnetwork tags, controlled mobility of wireless nodes, dynamicspectrumallocation and cognitive radio, interfaces betweenwireless and optical networks, and the resilience of networks togeographical failures. All of these projects build on the researchhe carried out during his Marie Curie Fellowship.His work is both timely and relevant, as it helps to ensure that theinvestments we make into wireless networks and applicationsare carefully researched, and that emerging applications operateeffi ciently and reliably.
