TEAMOHOLICAlthough it deals with animal clones, Teamoholic has little to do with duplication. In fact, it is a truly original projectdesigned to bring Hungary into the mainstream of the European genetic-engineering community and to strengthenlinks between academia and industry. It has even resulted in a spin-off company.
Teeming with lifeThe words ‘animal cloning’ put most people immediately inmind of Dolly which was the fi rst mammal to be cloned froman adult cell, and was described by Scientifi c American asthe ‘world’s most famous sheep’. The technique used toclone Dolly was known as ‘somatic cell nuclear transfer’. Thismethod involves replacing the nucleus of an egg cell with thatof an adult or foetal cell.Examples of benefi cial future applications are the multiplicationof high-value farm animals and the preservation of endangeredspecies. The potential applications of cloning include thecreation of customised stem cells that can be used in humanregenerative therapy, while any attempts to clone human beingsare strictly prohibited across the world.A more down-to-earth and practical current application is to usecloning to create transgenic animal models, such as mice orrabbits, which can be used for medical research. The advantageof somatic cell nuclear transfer is that it allows specifi c geneticmodifi cations in several species, including rabbits, pigs or cattle.The cloned animals can then be used as models to understandhuman diseases and develop treatments for serious illnesses,such as Alzheimer’s and atherosclerosis.Hungary for scienceWith Marie Curie funding, Andras Dinnyes, a specialist inembryology, cloning and stem cell biology, was able to assemblea top-notch international research team in Hungary. Teamoholic,as the project was known, scored numerous groundbreakingsuccesses and created the fi rst cloned mice and rabbits in centralEurope, transforming Hungary into a leading centre in the fi eld.‘This breakthrough has provided a very relevant tool for furtherbiomedical research for human disease models, and for geneticreprogramming in regenerative medicine,’ explains Dr Dinnyes.Marie Curie Excellence Grants aim to help researchers betteranchor their careers by providing funding to establish theirown group – which is exactly what occurred. During theproject, Dr Dinnyes – whose past achievements include theproduction of gene knock-out lambs and the fi rst clonedpiglet in Europe, while working at the Roslin Institute in theUK – received a permanent full professorship at Szent IstvanUniversity in Gödöllő, Hungary.
