With the aim of takinggeotechnical engineering a major step forward, the Amgiss project dug deep into these troublesome soils –and one of its Fellows even struck (Olympic) silver.
On soft groundWhen faced with ground which comprises soft sediments, suchas clays, silts or peat, construction engineers need to utiliseground-improvement techniques or their road, embankmentor building will deform or fail. Soft soil poses a problem formany important development projects. In Eastern Europe, forexample, lumpy clay soils are a result of many former open-castcoal mines that left vast ‘moonscapes’ where new infrastructureand housing redevelopment are urgently needed.Columns and drains are commonly used to make the groundsuitable for building, but complex interaction problems oftenarise between the reinforced soil and the new structure. Amajor reason for this is that current analysis techniques arebased on outdated and over-simplifi ed methods which do nottake account of the physical principles governing these soils.According to project leader Minna Karstunen of the Universityof Strathclyde in the UK, these methods are ‘at best very crudeand conservative, hence uneconomical, or at worst unsafe’.Soft soils in three dimensionsThe Amgiss project, dedicated to advanced modelling of groundimprovement on soft soils, brought together academic andindustrial partners to develop innovative numerical techniquesthat could vastly enhance the analysis of ground-improvementsystems. It counted 10 <strong>Marie</strong> <strong>Curie</strong> Fellows among its team of 50.Currently, analyses of ground-improvement systems rely onone- or two-dimensional mathematical models. The projectpartners used advanced constitutive modelling, laboratorytesting, centrifuge modelling, numerical implementation andnumerical modelling to create advanced, three-dimensional(3D) numerical tools. Their new modelling techniques weredeveloped to examine how soft soils interact with specifi cinterventions, such as vertical draining and stone columns.Until now, Dr Karstunen explains, such high-level 3D modellinghad not been used in geotechnical engineering. ‘This can beconsidered as a major advancement of the current state of theart,’ she acknowledges.309
