Back to the roots‘Without this fellowship, I would not have been able toexplore my own ideas and expand my scientifi c horizon theway I did,’ he adds. ‘It created a framework for my currentresearch and teaching skills, which I transfer to the studentsand research trainees I am supervising. Most importantly, this fellowship also gave me the possibility to return to mynative Netherlands to embed myself within the researchenvironment here. This greatly facilitated my reintegrationinto the European Research Area.’Even though he has returned to his roots now, connectionswith the research community outside the EU are thriving.Dr Gosens has an impressive number of publications andprojects under his belt, most of which were the result ofinternational collaborations. ‘My fellowship embedded mein an international network of leading scientists in thefield with whom I am still collaborating today,’ he says. All of his current research projects also reach well beyondthe borders of the Netherlands, involving colleagues all overEurope as well as in Asia, Australia and North America. Whatis more, Dr Gosens’ experiences during the Caveolins projecthave permanently altered his perspective on a professionalas well as personal level, he says: ‘It broadened my horizonin many respects and changed my point of view of thescientific community and the world in general.’Project acronymCaveolinsFull project titleCaveolae and caveolins: integrating signals for airway smoothmuscle cell proliferationType of grantOutgoing International FellowshipsBudgetEUR 192 106Duration of project01-03-2005 - 29-02-2008Scientific disciplineLife sciencesHost institutionsAndrew J.
