For th<strong>is</strong> reason we mosthumbly but most urgently entreat you to order a general reformation, and toundertake its accompl<strong>is</strong>hment."- Ibid., b. 7, ch. 4.<strong>The</strong> council now demanded the Reformer's appearance before them.Notwithstanding the entreaties, protests, and threats of Aleander, theemperor at last consented, and Luther was summoned to appear before theDiet. With the summons was <strong>is</strong>sued a safe-conduct, ensuring h<strong>is</strong> return to aplace of security. <strong>The</strong>se were borne to Wittenberg by a herald, who wascomm<strong>is</strong>sioned to conduct him to Worms.<strong>The</strong> friends of Luther were terrified and d<strong>is</strong>tressed. Knowing the prejudiceand enmity against him, they feared that even h<strong>is</strong> safe-conduct would not berespected, and they entreated him not to imperil h<strong>is</strong> life. He replied: "<strong>The</strong>pap<strong>is</strong>ts do not desire my coming to Worms, but my condemnation and mydeath. It matters not. Pray not for me, but for the word of God. . . . Chr<strong>is</strong>twill give me H<strong>is</strong> Spirit to overcome these min<strong>is</strong>ters of error. I desp<strong>is</strong>e themduring my life; I shall triumph over them by my death. <strong>The</strong>y are busy atWorms about compelling me to retract; and th<strong>is</strong> shall be my retraction: Isaid formerly that the pope was Chr<strong>is</strong>t's vicar; now I assert that he <strong>is</strong> ourLord's adversary, and the devil's apostle." Said the Reformer as he partedfrom Melanchthon: "If I do not return, and my enemies put me to death,continue to teach, and stand fast in the truth. Labor in my stead. . . .
