Catholic<strong>is</strong>m <strong>is</strong> gaining ground upon every side. See the increasingnumber of her churches and chapels in Protestant countries. Look at thepopularity of her colleges and seminaries in America, so widely patronizedby Protestants. Look at the growth of ritual<strong>is</strong>m in England and the frequentdefections to the ranks of the Catholics. <strong>The</strong>se things should awaken theanxiety of all who prize the pure principles of the gospel.Protestants have tampered with and patronized popery; they have madecomprom<strong>is</strong>es and concessions which pap<strong>is</strong>ts themselves are surpr<strong>is</strong>ed to seeand fail to understand. Men are closing their eyes to the real character ofRoman<strong>is</strong>m and the dangers to be apprehended from her supremacy. <strong>The</strong>people need to be aroused to res<strong>is</strong>t the advances of th<strong>is</strong> most dangerous foeto civil and religious liberty.Many Protestants suppose that the Catholic religion <strong>is</strong> unattractive and thatits worship <strong>is</strong> a dull, meaningless round of ceremony. Here they m<strong>is</strong>take.While Roman<strong>is</strong>m <strong>is</strong> based upon deception, it <strong>is</strong> not a coarse and clumsyimposture. <strong>The</strong> religious service of the Roman Church <strong>is</strong> a most impressiveceremonial.
