460H<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples. <strong>The</strong>se opponents of Jesus were men whom the people hadbeen taught from infancy to reverence, to whose authority they had beenaccustomed implicitly to bow. "How <strong>is</strong> it," they asked, "that our rulers andlearned scribes do not believe on Jesus? Would not these pious men receiveHim if He were the Chr<strong>is</strong>t?" It was the influence of such teachers that ledthe Jew<strong>is</strong>h nation to reject their Redeemer.<strong>The</strong> spirit which actuated those priests and rulers <strong>is</strong> still manifested bymany who make a high profession of piety. <strong>The</strong>y refuse to examine thetestimony of the Scriptures concerning the special truths for th<strong>is</strong> time. <strong>The</strong>ypoint to their own numbers, wealth, and popularity, and look with contemptupon the advocates of truth as few, poor, and unpopular, having a faith thatseparates them from the world.Chr<strong>is</strong>t foresaw that the undue assumption of authority indulged by thescribes and Phar<strong>is</strong>ees would not cease with the d<strong>is</strong>persion of the Jews. Hehad a prophetic view of the work of exalting human authority to rule theconscience, which has been so terrible a curse to the church in all ages. AndH<strong>is</strong> fearful denunciations of the scribes and Phar<strong>is</strong>ees, and H<strong>is</strong> warnings tothe people not to follow these blind leaders, were placed on record as anadmonition to future generations.<strong>The</strong> Roman Church reserves to the clergy the right to interpret theScriptures. On the ground that ecclesiastics alone are competent to explainGod's word, it <strong>is</strong> withheld from the common people.[* SEE APPENDIXNOTE FOR PAGE 340.] Though the Reformation gave the Scriptures toall, yet the selfsame principle which was maintained by Rome preventsmultitudes in Protestant churches from searching the Bible for themselves.<strong>The</strong>y are taught to accept its teachings as interpreted by the church; andthere are thousands who dare receive nothing, however plainly revealed inScripture, that <strong>is</strong> contrary to their creed or the establ<strong>is</strong>hed teaching of theirchurch.Notwithstanding the Bible <strong>is</strong> full of warnings against false teachers, manyare ready thus to commit the keeping of their souls to the clergy. <strong>The</strong>re aretoday thousands of professors of religion who can give no other reason forpoints of faith which they hold than that they were so instructed by theirreligious leaders. <strong>The</strong>y pass by the Saviour's teachings almost unnoticed,and place implicit confidence in the words of the min<strong>is</strong>ters. But aremin<strong>is</strong>ters infallible? How can we trust our souls to their guidance unless weknow from God's word that they are light bearers?
