H<strong>is</strong> warning cryceased not until he was slain in the siege he had foretold.Not one Chr<strong>is</strong>tian per<strong>is</strong>hed in the destruction of Jerusalem. Chr<strong>is</strong>t had givenH<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples warning, and all who believed H<strong>is</strong> words watched for theprom<strong>is</strong>ed sign. "When ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies," saidJesus, "then know that the desolation thereof <strong>is</strong> nigh. <strong>The</strong>n let them whichare in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of itdepart out." Luke 21:20, 21. After the Romans under Cestius hadsurrounded the city, they unexpectedly abandoned the siege wheneverything seemed favorable for an immediate attack. <strong>The</strong> besieged,despairing of successful res<strong>is</strong>tance, were on the point of surrender, when theRoman general withdrew h<strong>is</strong> forces without the least apparent reason. ButGod's merciful providence was directing events for the good of H<strong>is</strong> ownpeople.<strong>The</strong> prom<strong>is</strong>ed sign had been given to the waiting Chr<strong>is</strong>tians, andnow an opportunity was offered for all who would, to obey the Saviour'swarning. Events were so overruled that neither Jews nor Romans shouldhinder the flight of the Chr<strong>is</strong>tians. Upon the retreat of Cestius, the Jews,sallying from Jerusalem, pursued after h<strong>is</strong> retiring army; and while bothforces were thus fully engaged, the Chr<strong>is</strong>tians had an opportunity to leavethe city. At th<strong>is</strong> time the country also had been cleared of enemies whomight have endeavored to intercept them. At the time of the siege, the Jewswere assembled at Jerusalem to keep the Feast of Tabernacles, and thus theChr<strong>is</strong>tians throughout the land were able to make their escape unmolested.Without delay they fled to a place of safety–the city of Pella, in the land ofPerea, beyond Jordan.<strong>The</strong> Jew<strong>is</strong>h forces, pursuing after Cestius and h<strong>is</strong> army, fell upon their rearwith such fierceness as to threaten them with total destruction. It was withgreat difficulty that the Romans succeeded in making their retreat. <strong>The</strong> Jewsescaped almost without loss, and with their spoils returned in triumph toJerusalem. Yet th<strong>is</strong> apparent success brought them only evil. It inspiredthem with that spirit of stubborn res<strong>is</strong>tance to the Romans which speedilybrought unutterable woe upon the doomed city.Terrible were the calamities that fell upon Jerusalem when the siege wasresumed by Titus. <strong>The</strong> city was invested at the time of the Passover, whenmillions of Jews were assembled within its walls. <strong>The</strong>ir stores of prov<strong>is</strong>ion,which if carefully preserved would have supplied the inhabitants for years,had previously been destroyed through the jealousy and revenge of the
